Online Word Editor: questions & answers

Useful answers. Clear next steps.

At a glance

Upload a DOCX document or start a blank page. Click ordinary text to edit it in a paper-style view. Select text to change its font, size, color or emphasis; align paragraphs, add lists, insert paragraphs, pictures and tables, and use Undo, Redo or Find and replace. Download an edited DOCX copy. Existing DOCX tables, pictures, headers, footers and document parts remain in the package. Some fields, tracked changes and complex layouts are view-only, and unavailable fonts or browser pagination can differ from Microsoft Word. Legacy DOC imports readable text into a new DOCX layout; its old formatting and pictures are not recovered. Processing stays in the browser. Download before closing: work is not saved to an account. Macro-enabled, signed and password-protected files are not supported. 350 MB input limit, 80 MB expanded package limit, 5,000 paragraphs, 250,000 characters and 50 preview pages; device memory can impose lower limits. Standard site trial and access rules apply.

How do I edit a Word document online?

Upload a DOCX file, click a paragraph in the page view and type. Select text for formatting, or click a paragraph to format the whole paragraph. Enter creates another paragraph. Download DOCX saves an edited copy.

Does it keep my document formatting, tables and pictures?

DOCX edits change the original document XML. Untouched package parts remain, including pictures, tables, styles, headers and footers. Browser fonts and pagination can look different from Microsoft Word. Fields, tracked changes and some complex paragraphs remain view-only. Review the downloaded copy.

Can I open older DOC files?

Yes, supported Word 97–2003 DOC files import their readable text into a fresh DOCX document. Their original formatting, images and tables are not retained. For a closer visual match, first save a DOCX copy in your desktop editor.

Can I add or change pictures and tables?

Insert a PNG, JPG or WebP picture, or click a supported existing picture to replace or resize it. Add a table and edit its cells directly. Legacy drawings can be view-only. Replacement changes the selected drawing; other occurrences of the original image remain intact.

Are documents uploaded or saved to my account?

Document editing and DOCX export happen on this device. Your temporary work is not uploaded, saved to your account or automatically recovered after the tab closes. Download your edited copy before leaving. Feedback images are uploaded only if you choose to submit feedback.

What are the limits?

Choose an unlocked, unsigned, macro-free DOCX or a supported legacy DOC. Input is limited to 350 MB, expanded DOCX parts to 80 MB, 5,000 paragraphs, 250,000 characters and 50 preview pages. New images are limited to 10 MB and 24 megapixels. A browser may reach its memory limit sooner.
