A LITTLE CLARITY

Crop Image: questions & answers

Useful answers. Clear next steps.

At a glance

Choose a crop style, add one image and adjust the preview. Free Crop has no ratio lock; square, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 9:16 and custom ratios stay locked while resizing. Perspective Crop detects document corners for you to check and straighten. Circle Crop exports transparent PNG corners or a selected background. Passport / Visa Crop supports 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inch and custom sizes with 150, 300 or 600 PPI metadata. Crop and download the actual result. Processing stays in your browser. One image, within the 350 MB upload and output budgets. No fixed pixel or megapixel upload cap; browser memory and codec limits apply.

How do I crop an image?

Choose a crop style, upload one image and drag the highlighted frame or its corners. Check the output dimensions, select a download format, then press Crop image. Review the actual processed result before downloading.

Which crop styles are available?

Free Crop, Perspective Crop, Circle Crop, Passport / Visa Crop, Square (1:1), Widescreen (16:9), Standard (4:3), Photo (3:2), Vertical (9:16) and Custom Aspect Ratio. The legacy 3:4 portrait option is also available in the style selector.

Does the selected aspect ratio stay locked?

Yes. Dragging corners or editing width or height keeps a selected ratio. Drag inside the frame to move it without resizing. Choose Free Crop to move corners independently. A fixed ratio may differ by at most a pixel after integer output dimensions are rounded.

How does Perspective Crop straighten a document?

On upload, the browser attempts to detect a light document against a darker surface. Choose Perspective Crop, check the four numbered corners and move them onto the document boundary. Cropping applies a projective transform to export a straight rectangular image. Automatic detection is approximate; set the corners manually when necessary.

Can I crop a circle with transparent corners?

Yes. Circle Crop keeps a square selection and clips it to a circle. Transparent corners require PNG. Alternatively, turn transparency off and choose a background color. JPEG does not support transparent corners.

Can I crop passport or visa photos to a physical size?

Choose Passport / Visa Crop, then a common 35 × 45 mm or US 2 × 2 inch preset, or custom 10–100 mm dimensions. Select 150, 300 or 600 PPI and frame the photo. The exported PNG has the corresponding pixel dimensions and physical-resolution metadata. Requirements vary by issuing authority; acceptance is not guaranteed. For a printable sheet, use Create Passport / Visa Photo.

Which files and upload limits are supported?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF first frame and browser-supported AVIF. SVG and HEIC are not supported by these workspaces. There is no fixed pixel or megapixel upload cap. Browser memory and codec limits apply. Files must fit a 350 MB combined input budget. Results are limited to 350 MB combined; available browser memory can impose lower practical limits. This tool accepts one image at a time.

What happens to quality, transparency and metadata?

Choose PNG for lossless pixel output or transparency, or JPEG/WebP where offered for smaller photo files. JPEG flattens transparency. Re-encoding, resizing and transformations can change quality; inspect fine detail and text. New canvas-generated files do not retain source EXIF metadata. Animated inputs are exported as a still first frame.

Is processing private and can I cancel?

Processing runs in browser workers. Images and output blobs are not uploaded or stored in the service-worker cache. Cancel & reset terminates the worker and clears this workspace; it does not delete your original device files. Keep your originals until you verify the download.
