How to compress a PDF to a KB or MB size

Pick a limit. Choose your PDF. Review your result.

1

Select your PDF

Drop a PDF or browse your device. Phone, tablet or desktop — no app to install.

2

Enter your target size

Type a KB or MB value. Choose Quality or DPI, or use By quality / More options in the workspace.

Review & download

Compare the original and output. Download a PDF or batch ZIP. An unmet target is clearly labeled.

Compress a PDF to the size you need

Useful controls, clear limits, and a real file you can check.

Your own KB or MB target

Enter a size such as 137 KB or 3.4 MB. We search within safe image settings and clearly report whether the file fits.

Quality or DPI — your choice

Quality mode keeps image dimensions. DPI mode keeps JPEG quality at 94% while searching resolution. Native PDF text is unaffected.

No added watermarks

Your compressed PDF has no tooldu.com logos, stamps or added pages. Keep your original and review the downloaded result.

Private browser processing

Files are processed locally in a dedicated browser worker. Your PDF is never uploaded to a document server.

Original text stays sharp

Selectable text, embedded font resources, vectors and editable fields remain native. Scanned text is an image: compare it carefully.

One file or a batch

Add up to ten PDFs within 350 MB combined. Download individual files or a ZIP, then continue into another PDF tool.

Reach a portal limit safely

Structural optimization runs first. If the existing PDF already fits, unnecessary image degradation is avoided.

Protect readable scan detail

For targets below 1 MB, Quality mode stops at 84% JPEG quality. DPI mode stops at 200 PPI. Some files will not fit safely.

Know what you are downloading

See target and actual sizes, output quality and an original/output preview. An unmet file is never presented as fitting your limit.

Prefer a ready-made size?

Select a size to update the compressor. Your PDF is processed only when you start.

When an upload size matters

A clear size limit helps you prepare the right document.

Government & visa forms

Choose the limit shown by the portal. Review small print and check the actual output size before submitting.

Job applications & resumes

Make a CV easier to upload while preserving native selectable text and font resources.

Email attachments

Use a smaller attachment for sharing. Ordinary PDF attachments inside your file remain unless edited separately.

Education & upload portals

Prepare assignments, certificates and application documents for a portal’s stated KB or MB ceiling.

A LITTLE CLARITY

Useful answers. Clear next steps.

At a glance

Enter any target from 1 KB to 350 MB, including decimal values such as 137 KB or 3.4 MB. Quality mode keeps image dimensions and searches JPEG quality; DPI mode keeps 94% JPEG quality and searches resolution. Below 1 MB, Quality stops at 84% quality and DPI stops at 200 PPI. Structural optimization runs first, native text and fonts remain intact, and an unmet target is explicitly reported. Add up to ten PDFs within 350 MB combined and 150 pages each, compare previews and download PDFs or a ZIP. An anonymous 30-minute free trial is available, with paid passes for continuous access. Registered accounts can start 30 continuous minutes of all-tools access every 3 hours, measured from the previous start. Idle time counts; unused minutes do not roll over. Paid passes provide continuous access. This tool is completely free without registration, payment or a session time limit. Use it as often as you like. Published file, codec and device-memory limits still apply. Other tools have separate access rules.

How do I compress a PDF to a specific KB or MB size?

Enter your target from 1 KB to 350 MB, choose KB or MB, add an unlocked PDF and click Start Compressing. Structural optimization runs first. Then the chosen image method searches supported image settings. Check Target and Actual sizes before downloading. KB is 1,024 bytes and MB is 1,048,576 bytes here.

Can I choose any size instead of a preset?

Yes. Positive decimal values are supported, such as 137 KB, 200 KB or 3.4 MB. Presets include 50, 90, 100, 150, 200, 300, 420, 500, 650 and 820 KB and 1, 2, 5 and 10 MB. They update the same compressor; they are not separate pages or automatic processing actions.

What is the difference between Quality and DPI?

Quality mode preserves the original embedded image dimensions and searches JPEG quality. DPI mode keeps JPEG quality at 94% and searches image resolution without upscaling. For targets below 1 MB, Quality stops at 84% quality and DPI stops at 200 PPI. Native PDF text and vector graphics remain unchanged in either method.

Will compression reduce text readability?

Native selectable text, fonts, vector graphics and editable fields are retained without flattening. Scanned text is inside an image, so its appearance can change. The sub-MB safeguards limit degradation; compare original and output previews before sharing. Exact scan quality cannot be guaranteed.

What if my PDF cannot reach the target size?

Some files contain large attachments, unsupported images or already optimized content. If the target cannot be met within the chosen method and safety limits, the result explicitly shows Target not reached and its actual size. You may download the best tested readable result, choose another method or raise the target. We never pad a file or claim an oversized result meets its limit.

Can I still use quality levels and advanced options?

Basic uses up to 300 PPI and 90% JPEG quality, Strong 144 PPI and 70%, and Extreme 72 PPI and 50%. Existing images are never upscaled. Final savings depend on the source file. More options also provides Medium 65%, Good 82% or Best 94% quality, 72–720 PPI, grayscale, faster mode, optional multimedia removal and lossless font-stream recompression. These manual settings are separate from automatic target mode.

Can I compress multiple files and keep multimedia?

Up to ten PDFs, 350 MB each, 350 MB combined and 150 pages each. Compression is sequential with individual PDF and ZIP downloads. Multimedia annotations are kept by default; you can explicitly discard Movie, Sound, Screen and RichMedia annotations. Ordinary attachments remain.

Is compression browser-only?

Yes. PDFs are processed in a dedicated browser worker. Files are not uploaded to the tooldu.com backend. Download results or continue into another tool through temporary local storage.

Is it free without an account?

This tool is completely free without registration, payment or a session time limit. Use it as often as you like. Published file, codec and device-memory limits still apply. Other tools have separate access rules.

Are there file or document restrictions?

Use up to ten unlocked PDFs within 350 MB combined and 150 pages per PDF. Device memory can impose lower practical limits. Digitally signed files require an unsigned copy. Transparent, stencil, inline and unsupported images may remain unchanged. Attachments are kept, so they can prevent a small target from being reached.
